Greater MN Parks & Trails Annual Meeting Preview

The Greater Minnesota Parks & Trails Annual Memberhip Meeting is coming up soon! The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 19th at 10 a.m. at the Monticello Community Center.

The agenda for the meeting will include:

  • Elections for 2017-2018 GMPT Board positions
  • Discussion and adoption of the 2017 legislative policies and agenda
  • Update for Greater Minnesota Regional Parks & Trails Commission (GMRPTC)on designation and applications
  • Update on local parks and trails funding

Regarding the legislative policies and agenda – it is critical that we hear from members about what is important to them. Members were previously emailed a link to a survey regarding the development of next year’s policies. The survey can be accessed at https://goo.gl/forms/d3EmYpLZgVv2eksD3.

If you haven’t filled it out yet, please take the survey and give us your thoughts on the proposed policies and agenda. Please fill in the blanks if you would like to make any changes, additions or deletions.

Legislative Action Day 2024 Recap
On March 14, GMPT hosted our Annual Legislative Action Day at the State Capitol, which featured an agenda packed with interesting and informative programming. Thank you to all who attended in person and virtually! The morning kicked off with a great discussion with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Director Ann Pierce and Assistant Commissioner Bob Meier, who provided a glimpse into the legislative priorities we share and how our collective advocacy efforts support funding and good policy for parks facilities and trail connectivity in Greater Minnesota.
RECAP: February forum offers updates and advice for DNR grants
GMPT’s February forum had a great turnout, with over 40 people joining us to learn more about the DNR grants program. Grant Coordinators Sarah Wennerberg and Jennifer Bubke introduced themselves and provided a comprehensive overview of the Parks and Trails grants offered within their grants divisions. The presentation touched on the details of each grant, explaining eligibility criteria, funding ranges, matching fund requirements, and funding sources. 
Legislative session is almost upon us
In less than two weeks, the Minnesota Legislature will reconvene, and although the second half of the biennium is shorter, it will likely be another busy session. Because it is not a budget year, the Legislature will be focused primarily on the bonding bill and policy issues. For GMPT, we have several priorities for 2024. We would like to see more funding for the DNR’s local park and trails grant programs and will be pushing for the inclusion of such funds in the bonding bill.
