On March 14, GMPT hosted our Annual Legislative Action Day at the State Capitol, which featured an agenda packed with interesting and informative programming. Thank you to all who attended in person and virtually! The morning kicked off with a great discussion with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Parks and Trails Director Ann Pierce and Assistant Commissioner Bob Meier, who provided a glimpse into the legislative priorities we share and how our collective advocacy efforts support funding and good policy for parks facilities and trail connectivity in Greater Minnesota.
Proposed legislation would hamper land acquisition
Rep. Steve Green (R-Fosston) has introduced legislation (HF 247) that would prohibit political subdivisions from acquiring land at a price higher than the county assessed value. The DNR already faces such a restriction and it causes problems because the county assessed value is usually lower than the market value.
It is too early to say whether this bill will advance. Rep. Green introduced a number of similar restrictive bills in the past, and few have advanced. However, the legislative playing field has changed now that majority control has switched in the Senate. At the moment, there is not a Senate author.
The GMPT board will discuss whether we will take a position on this bill. At minimum, we will monitor it and keep our members updated. If you are concerned about this bill, please email Elizabeth Wefel at eawefel@flaherty-hood.com. Rep. Joe McDonald (R-Delano) and Rep. Chris Swedzinski (R-Ghent) are the co-authors on this bill. If you live in their districts, please share your concern with them as well.
