Member Highlight: Biochar Demonstration co-hosted by the City of Owatonna

Below is a contribution from GMPT Member the City of Owatonna. For more information, please visit owatonna.gov.

The City of Owatonna is partnering with Great River Greening (GRG)—a St. Paul-based organization that’s Minnesota’s leader in nature-based climate solutions—to host a biochar demonstration event from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on March 18.

Biochar is created from wood waste that is heated through a low oxygen environment (pyrolysis) and transformed into stabilized carbon. Biochar can then be used as a soil amendment to increase organic carbon in the soil. Biochar created using flame capped kilns is a highly stable form of carbon that can enrich the soil for over 100 years. During the event, GRG staff will demonstrate the use of biochar kilns for converting waste wood into soil enriching biochar as a cleaner burning, alternative to open pile burning. View the flyer for more information.

This event is open to anyone who’s interested! Click here to register. For questions, please contact Todd Rexine at trexine@greatrivergreening.org.
