From the Chair: Our members make us strong

Below is a message from GMPT Chair Gina Hugo. You can reach her at gina.hugo@co.sherburne.mn.us.

Greetings, Greater MN Parks & Trails Members! As we close out the month of February, let’s take another opportunity to honor Black History Month: Did you know that in 1903, a man named Charles Young, who was born to enslaved parents, became the first African American National Park Superintendent? He became the 9th African American to attend West Point Academy and the 3rd to graduate. His military career continued through many challenges, yet he continued to achieve because of his work ethic, academic leadership, and devoted service. He became a professor at Wilberforce University and the author of The Military Morale of Nations and Races (1911). Captain Charles Young is an amazing figure in black history who had a profound impact on land protection. If you want to learn more, the National Park Service is a great resource.

For GMPT, February is also when we have seen new and renewing members contributing and making the work we do as an organization possible. A warm welcome to new members, we are so glad to grow GMPT with each of you! Also, to renewing members—thank you for your continued support! The important legislative advocacy work we do to ensure sustained funding for parks and trails depends on your membership dues and, more importantly, your voices! As the legislative session continues, watch for Action Alerts, and please take the opportunity to contact your local representatives—your voice does make a difference.

What follows in this month’s newsletter are several opportunities you will want to check out. Our Communications Team and Board of Directors are busy working with GMRPTC staff to plan content for virtual forums, our Summer Meeting, and our Annual Fall Meeting. We look forward to your participation!
