On October 19, Club Mesabi hosted a Halloween Costume Dog Walk on the Mesabi Trail, complete with free pet portraits by AV Photography. People and their pets were encouraged to dress in costume to celebrate their furry friends and have some fun in the spooky Halloween season. Club Mesabi partnered with Contented Critters—a non-profit pet rescue in Ely—along with the Visit Ely tourism bureau to bring this event together, offering free dog treats for furry friends and free snacks for their humans. This was a great opportunity for folks to practice trail etiquette when walking with their pets, learn about a great local business supporting pets, and enjoy a perfect October morning in northern Minnesota.
While it was just a small turnout for this first event, attendees included people who brought their pets and some who came just to walk. And even though there were no costumed people, the pets were having a blast sporting their best Halloween looks!
The walk started at the Mesabi Trail Eagles Nest Trailhead in the Vermilion section of the trail. The weather could not have been nicer, and the fall colors shone in the mellow morning sunlight. But enough waxing poetic… Club Mesabi will be hosting this event again next year, as everyone who participated had a great time.
Club Mesabi has been working hard this year to promote the Mesabi Trail, engaging residents and businesses alike. They held a community ride in Giants Ridge at the beginning of the biking season, the Great River Energy bike tour in August, this fun Halloween Walk last week, and have another event scheduled in November called a Ride and Read—so keep an eye out for more information on the Mesabi Trail Facebook page! Club Mesabi has brought attention to numerous businesses that support the Mesabi Trail through shoutouts on Facebook, introducing the businesses to trail users who may not have known about them otherwise. They have also participated in events held in towns along the corridor, like the Hibbing Bike Rodeo in May, United Way Days of Action in June, and the Biking Across MN ride in August.
The Mesabi Trail benefits our local folks as much as it inspires tourism, and Club Mesabi is a big part of making those connections happen!
