GMRPTC Update: IMBA Trail Labs Launch in Winona, MN

From May 6 – 8, the city of Winona proudly hosted Minnesota’s first IMBA Trail Lab, marking a significant milestone in mountain bike trail development across the state. Traditionally held in Bentonville, Arkansas, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) recently sought new host locations—and Minnesota seized the opportunity. Thanks to local initiative and enthusiasm, Winona became the inaugural site.

Winona’s selection was supported by its successful track record of trail development, having previously secured funding from the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trails Commission (GMRPTC) for mountain bike trail construction in two separate grant cycles. These new and expanding trails provided an ideal environment for hands-on learning and demonstration during the lab.
The event combined classroom-based sessions with practical, on-the-ground instruction. IMBA staff ensured the lab ran smoothly and provided valuable insights into sustainable trail planning, design, and maintenance.

Nearly 20 attendees participated, including trail advocates, planners, and land managers. While this group was smaller than typical Trail Labs, IMBA staff expressed satisfaction with the engagement and feedback. Participants appreciated both the instructional quality and Winona’s welcoming atmosphere, as well as the opportunity to explore its growing trail network.
Looking ahead, the next IMBA Trail Lab in Minnesota is scheduled for October 1–2 in Duluth—another community with a strong reputation for mountain biking and outdoor recreation.
